De Vor Communications was hired as a subconsultant to provide public involvement and community outreach services for both the Environmental Study and Design project which is located within two counties and nine municipalities.
The I-41 Project will reconstruct and expand 23 miles of interstate from four to six lanes between WIS 96 (Wisconsin Avenue) near Appleton and County F (Scheuring Road) in De Pere. Additional improvements include:
The De Vor team is an integral part of the communications as this project is a major effort that requires especially close ties betweenWisDOT, project engineers and stakeholders. The primary objective of the public involvement and community outreach for this project is to provide opportunities for active participation and meaningful input from stakeholders and the public as the project moves forward with final design plans.
In addition to meeting with various groups throughout the project corridor, a major effort on this project included assisting with the development of a dedicated project website, which is currently only one of two stand-alone websites for WisDOT projects. Website development included the creation of videos and interactive features such as a sliding project schedule and maps visualizing the planned improvements. The team also designs and maintains pages showcasing project news and events, and information presented at public and business meetings.
Strategies for inclusive engagement are at the forefront of outreach efforts. Various communication methods are being implemented to facilitate increased participation of under-represented groups to convey project information in a way that is tailored to each community. Outreach efforts include engaging with Environmental Justice (EJ) and Social Service agency community leaders to offer opportunities for small-group, in-person meetings at community meeting places; providing downloadable materials in Hmong and Spanish. The website can also be viewed in multiple languages and a UserWay Accessibility Widget was added to allow users to select accessibility tools that may be the most helpful to them.
